History

Born in Canidelo, in Gaia, Manuel Marques Gomes (1867-1932) was a businessman and a philanthropist. Owner of the Morgado Estate in Alumiara (Canidelo, Gaia), he built a palace big enough for his thirteen children there, and it now bears his name. He planted a forest on the estate with trees imported from Brazil.

Apart from being a successful businessman, Manuel Marques Gomes sponsored and supported numerous works of public interest and of charity, of note being the Lisbon Literary Club, the Venerable Third Order of St Francis of Assisi and the Portuguese Charity Hospital of Belém.
